You were not born neutral
There is a common myth — useful in some contexts, false in others — that a newborn is a blank slate. Clean. Unwritten. Waiting to be shaped entirely by what comes next.
In Stringism, this is not accurate. A newborn is not blank. It is a fresh knot formed from the strings of its parents, carrying within it the emotional residue of everything those strings have ever been through. The inclination toward certain feelings — toward optimism or pessimism, toward openness or guardedness, toward joy or melancholy — is already present at birth. It is written in the inherited strings.
This is not fate. It is your starting position.
The baseline and what shapes it
Every string that forms you carries a kind of emotional charge — the feeling-state of the experience that created or modified it. Because you are composed of thousands of such strings, you have a baseline: a resting emotional state that influences how you experience everything that follows.
Someone whose strings are weighted toward negative experiences will tend toward a darker baseline — not because they are broken, but because their strings carry a different charge. This is not permanent. New experiences create new strings, and new strings can shift the balance over time.
Calibration: the gap between people
Here is what makes relationships difficult: your definition of "happy" is not my definition of "happy." Your calibration of "close friendship" is not the same as mine. We use the same words and assume we are describing the same internal states. We are often not.
Calibration is the process — conscious or unconscious — of aligning your felt definitions with those of another person. When two people achieve genuine calibration, their strings are resonating at a compatible frequency. They understand each other not merely intellectually but emotionally and structurally.
Miscalibration is not a moral failing. It is a string mismatch. Recognizing it as such removes blame and opens the door to actual adjustment.
What to do with this
You cannot choose your baseline. But you can become conscious of it. That awareness is the beginning of calibration. And you can choose which new strings you allow to form. Every experience you seek, every person you let close, every practice you maintain is adding new strings to the knot of you. Over years, this shifts the baseline. Slowly. Not easily. But genuinely.
